Join the conversation about the differences that separate Hoosiers between rural and urban communities. We will paint pictures of our homes. Please bring a large photo of your home.
Let's celebrate our community by painting it. At this Community Read event, we will reflect on the themes of this year's community read book, The Year We Left Home.
How will we paint our own homes? You've heard of classes where you "Paint Your Pet," and it's much the same in this class: participants choose to paint an image of their home--either your childhood home, your current home, or whatever home you feel. Bring as large a picture of your house as you can--you can even print it at the Library just before the painting class. We will work together to draw our houses and paint together. Feel free to be creative with your idea of home.
This event is one of three La Porte County Public Library events that are part of our participation in Indiana Humanities's One State / One Story:
- Jean Thompson’s novel, The Year We Left Home, is available as a book club discussion kit, book, and eBook.
- A Coffee & Canvas series brings our communities together to talk about ideas of home while creating a painting of their own home. Have you heard of classes where you "Paint Your Pet"? In this class, participants choose to paint an image of their home--either your childhood home, your current home, or whatever home you feel.
- Liz Wuerffel and Allison Schuette (associate professors of art and English) will present on the racial history of northwest Indiana and how white flight shaped the relationship between the Region and rural Northwest Indiana. Join this event on Zoom or watch online on September 1.
Indiana Humanities' One State / One Story program invites Hoosiers to engage deeply with a book as part of a statewide conversation. In 2020, during the second year of INseparable, Indiana will read and discuss Jean Thompson’s The Year We Left Home, which offers a sweeping, multigenerational look at life in the Midwest over the past several decades.
